Chili Update!

Cait here- Busy, busy, busy! All of a sudden it gets nice out and there aren't enough hours in the day! I lucked out for the Chili Cook-off! The weather people threatened rain but it held off and other than a blustery start, we had a gorgeous day and what a turn out! I had the pleasure of meeting some lovely ladies, Kay and Stephanie, from the shoreline area- who make kids' accessories including bibs, onesies, and a special 'Mom Kit' that Kay will have to explain! I also had the pleasure of trying some amazing chilis containing everything from chocolate to apples. There was also a bacon brittle that was surprisingly good, but I do recommend an open mind & palette! A lovely lady from Amigo's Hot Sauce, changed my world with a carrot and mango sauce! I can't wait for next year so mark your calendars May 1, 2010!

Egg-Ceptional Spellers

Last Thursday, Deb, Arlene, her sister, and two of her closest friends, Evie and Mary Jane, competed in an adult spelling bee to benefit the RHAM Education Fund. Although I was only there for support, I am a RHAM High school graduate. It was great to see former teachers, vice principals, and super-intendants try to spell their way to victory. Although we tied for third, I have to say that our handmade t-shirts came in first! Congratulations to all those who participated and thanks to all those who donated their time, services, and delicious treats!

Happy Babka Day!

On Friday we celebrated the much anticipated "Babka Day!" 'Babka Day you say....Whats that?' Well, babka is delicious sweet bread that we make once a year, for an entire day. 'Can you make it other days?' Sure, but then it wouldn't be so special. Filled with poppy seeds and sweetened cream cheese, its become a pre-Easter ritual. We also dyed eggs that will magically appear in the newly constructed Easter Bunny hut on Easter. I may be young, but traditions are traditions.Even though it was too cold for April and all too windy, I hope you had a wonderful Easter, Passover, or whatever you celebrate!

An Egg-ceptional Workshop

On Friday night, we had three lovely ladies join us for an egg-citing, glittery, colorful egg-stavaganza (ok I'm done). Judy, Melissa, and Nicole (in no specific order) expanded their egg decorating skills from the tradiontional PAAS kits to decoupage, gilding, and even sgraffitto! The class was supposed to be from 7 until 9 but we were having such a great time that the crafters didn't leave until 10:30! There was talk of a sleep over next time! Using glass glitter, Melissa created her own mix including gold, silver, and pink. Overcoming adversity, Judy recovered her dropped egg by using gold leaf to correct any imperfections. Nicole, came prepared with a pineapple picture to try her hand at sgraffitto. With such a great group of ladies, we look forward to many more fun and messy evenings!

Golden Eggs Relay

Without much deliberation needed, I've decided that The Golden Egg Studio needed to form a team of crafters and patrons to participate in Glastonbury's American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Unfortunately, I can't say that I know too many people who have not been affected by cancer. My 89 year old overly adventurous grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. I'm only 23 and I have witnessed its devastating influence on my life and those around me. So, on June 12 and 13th, we will be walking (and camping!) at River Front Park on Naubuc Avenue from 3 PM until 12 PM. The Golden Egg Studio will also be holding a tagsale and bake sale to benefit the Relay on May 16 and 17th from 9 until 3 PM. Please stop by and support the end to cancer!

Please visit our team's page to donate! We are 'The Golden Eggs'-clever huh?

Racing Ahead

My daughter Cait is on a roll. Her energy is contagious, but I do run out of steam before she does. She has signed us up for the Relay for Life and I am onboard too. We are planning fundraisers in addition to the Relay itself. More info to come.

I love traditional crafts. I use sgraffitto or scratch carving to decorate goose eggs. This is a technique used by the Europeans and the Pennsylvania Germans to decorate eggs and pottery for centuries. I was very pleased to find a site that fosters the practice of traditional folk arts, Traditionalfolkarts.com. They are also supporting the American Cancer Society with a Spring Welcoming sale. Check out the beautiful handwork of these talented artists. Clink on the link to the left to see their wares.

New Beginnings

This is our first foray into the world of blogging. The community of bloggers associated with art is so diverse and interesting. It seems to be a supportive and inspirational group of individuals. We are looking forward to being a part of it.

Ellie, Cait (my daughter) and I are artisans who run a small, weekends only, consignment shop that features local artisans. We also host classes, workshops and parties in our studio.
Our collaboration is friendly, patient and tolerant. We are all very different people. I am a person who needs everything out when I work. I do best when I leave things where they are until I need them again. I can remember where I last put something, but I have a hard time remembering where something is if it is “filed away”. Of course this is not in the best interest of anyone else around, so I attempt to leave clear spaces for others to work.

Ellie, Cait and I will be taking turns editing this blog, We all share art as a passion, and The Golden Egg is our conduit to that collaboration. We are very blessed that we have each other and the wonderful space my husband Ray created. Life is full and interesting and we hope to share some of it with you through this blog.
